    Dependence of quantum-Hall conductance on the edge-state equilibration position in a bipolar graphene sheet

    By using four-terminal configurations, we investigated the dependence of longitudinal and diagonal resistances of a graphene p-n interface on the quantum-Hall edge-state equilibration position. The resistance of a p-n device in our four-terminal scheme is asymmetric with respect to the zero point where the filling factor (ν\nu) of the entire graphene vanishes. This resistance asymmetry is caused by the chiral-direction-dependent change of the equilibration position and leads to a deeper insight into the equilibration process of the quantum-Hall edge states in a bipolar graphene system.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, will be published in PR

    Salmonella typhimurium harboring plasmid expressing interleukin-12 induced attenuation of infection and protective immune responses

    IL-12 is known to be an essential cytokine which appears to provide protective immunity against intracellular bacteria, such as Salmonella. In this study, we investigated the possibility of developing a vaccine using IL-12 against virulent Salmonella. We used the host defense system activated by cytokine IL-12. The highly virulent Salmonella strain (Salmonella typhimurium UK-1) was transformed with cytokine-expressing plasmids. These live, wild-type pathogens were used as vaccine strains without undergoing any other biological or genetic attenuating processes. The newly developed strains induced partial protection from infections (30-40%). Of note, the interleukin-12 transformed pathogen was safe upon immunization with low doses (103 CFU), induced IgG responses, and stimulated protective immune responses against Salmonella Typhimurium in mice (80-100%). These results suggest that IL-12 induced attenuation of wild-type Salmonella in the host infection stage and vaccine development using the wild-type strain harboring IL-12 secreting plasmids may be considered as an alternative process for intracellular bacterial vaccine development without the inconvenience of time-consuming attenuation processes

    Thermoelectric Transport of Massive Dirac Fermions in Bilayer Graphene

    Thermoelectric power (TEP) is measured in bilayer graphene for various temperatures and charge-carrier densities. At low temperatures, measured TEP well follows the semiclassical Mott formula with a hyperbolic dispersion relation. TEP for a high carrier density shows a linear temperature dependence, which demonstrates a weak electron-phonon interaction in the bilayer graphene. For a low carrier density, a deviation from the Mott relation is observed at high temperatures and is attributed to the low Fermi temperature in the bilayer graphene. Oscillating TEP and the Nernst effect for varying carrier density, observed in a high magnetic field, are qualitatively explained by the two dimensionality of the system.Comment: published versio

    THE HOT GAS DESULFURIZATION IN A COMPACT TWO BEDS SYSTEM INTEGRATED WITH COAL GASIFICATION AND FISHER-TROPSCH SYSTEM

    The hot gas desulfurization (HGD) technique is one of the elemental technologies of syngas purification having both thermal efficiency and very low emissions. The HGD is a novel method to efficiently remove H2S and COS in the syngas with regenerable sorbents at high temperature and high pressure condition. We propose a compact hot gas desulfurization system by which its operability is improved in stabilizing pressure balances among units. The proposed compact two beds system has two bubbling beds, solid injection nozzle, solid conveying line, and riser. The compact desulfurization system was located between coal gasifier and Fisher-Tropsch (F-T) reactor to desulfurize syngas in order not to deactivate F-T catalyst. To check feasibility of the compact desulfurization system at high pressure condition, both cold mode and hot mode tests have been performed. In the integrated system, the compact desulfurization system has removed H2S and COS in the syngas and supplied the cleaned syngas to the F-T reactor during the continuous operation at high pressure condition

    Lumbar Stenosis: A Recent Update by Review of Literature

    Degeneration of the intervertebral disc results in initial relative instability, hypermobility, and hypertrophy of the facet joints, particularly at the superior articular process. This finally leads to a reduction of the spinal canal dimensions and compression of the neural elements, which can result in neurogenic intermittent claudication caused by venous congestion and arterial hypertension around nerve roots. Most patients with symptomatic lumbar stenosis had neurogenic intermittent claudication with the risk of a fall. However, although the physical findings and clinical symptoms in lumbar stenosis are not acute, the radiographic findings are comparatively severe. Magnetic resonance imaging is a noninvasive and good method for evaluation of lumbar stenosis. Though there are very few studies pertaining to the natural progression of lumbar spinal stenosis, symptoms of spinal stenosis usually respond favorably to non-operative management. In patients who fail to respond to non-operative management, surgical treatments such as decompression or decompression with spinal fusion are required. Restoration of a normal pelvic tilt after lumbar fusion correlates to a good clinical outcome

    Glutathione S-transferase pi (GST-pi) inhibition and anti-inflammation activity of the ethyl acetate extract of Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637

    AbstractTo investigate the anti-cancer properties of soil-borne actinobacteria, MJM 8637, the glutathione S-transferase pi (GST-pi) assay, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α assay, the level of antioxidant potential by DPPH radical scavenging activity, NO scavenging activity, and ABTS radical scavenging activity in ethyl acetate extract were determined. The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637, which was isolated from Hambak Mountain, Korea, has 99.5% similarity to Streptomyces atratus strain NBRC 3897. The physiological and the morphological characteristics of the strain MJM 8637 were also identified. The ethyl acetate extract of MJM 8637 inhibited TNF-α production approximately 61.8% at concentration 100μg/ml. The IC50 value of the strain MJM 8637 extract on GST-pi was identified to be 120.2±1.6μg/ml. In DPPH, NO, and ABTS radical scavenging assays, the IC50 values of the strain MJM 8637 extract were found to be 977.2μg/ml, 1143.7μg/ml, and 454.4μg/ml, respectively. The ethyl acetate extract of the strain MJM 8637 showed 97.2±1.3% of cell viability at 100μg/ml in RAW 264.7 cell viability assay. The results obtained from this study suggest that the ethyl acetate extract of Streptomyces sp. strain MJM 8637 could be considered as a potential source of drug for the cancers that have multidrug resistance with its GST-pi inhibition and anti-inflammation activities, and low cytotoxicity
